"Getting to One" is an on-going series in which I review categories of software and explain why I have chosen a specific product. Today I explain why I use delicious for bookmarking
All browsers have the same sort of function which allows you to save a shortcut to a web page that you find particularly interesting. This list of shortcuts quickly becomes very long so you can usually collect bookmarks in folders such as "news" ,"travel", "fun" and so on. The disadvantages of traditional bookmarking are
- The list of bookmarks is held on one computer
- You need to have the discipline to collect bookmarks in the correct folder
A word of warning. Delicious is very proud of its "social bookmarking" approach which allows you to share your favourites. Coming from a generation who would rather share their toothbrush with a stranger than share information I was pleased to see that you can set all of your bookmarks to be private.
